“Mindfulness isn’t as mysterious as it may sound.” - Kayla Taylor
DID YOU KNOW… that regular mindfulness has a significant impact on emotions, mood, anxiety, depression, focus, and memory?
And those are just some of the many positive outcomes!
Mindfulness has also been shown to help modulate fear centres in our prefrontal lobe, meaning that we can think about (and appraise) situations more logically, have a greater sense of calm and well-being during stressful situations and experience less psychological distress overall.
Wow! Who doesn’t want more of that?
Mindfulness isn’t as mysterious as it may sound. By definition, it is the non-judgemental awareness of the present moment. It just takes consciously tuning into the current situation and our internal experiences. At any given moment, we can stop and consider:
The current environment
Our senses/sensations
Our emotions
Our thoughts (that come and go)
We can do this by taking a ‘mindful minute’ to relax into a position (standing, seated, or laying), taking a few deep breaths and just noticing the things that you sense and feel.
What do you see, if your eyes are open?
What do you hear?
What do you feel? Body sensations and emotions. Take time to notice where there might be tension in your body and relax your tight muscles.
What do you smell or taste?
Can you notice if your thoughts take you somewhere?
When they do, can you nonjudgmentally bring your awareness back to your body, your breath, and these sensations for just a bit longer?
Try this for just 1-2 minutes or more if you wish.
Mindfulness can, quite literally, change your brain and your psychological and physical well-being as a result. We invite you to try it.
